HANDLING OF GRAIN
NEED FOR IMPROVEMENT IN SOUTH CANTERBURY SEEN Grain handling in certain South Canterbury mills and stores will need improvement before the start of another season, according to Mr T. H. Langford, No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority, who returned from the south yesterday. Carriers were to some extent responsible for the present poor handling, Mr Langford said. Facilities at various mill sidings were bad. The Timaru railway yard on Saturday morning had been blocked, and shunters had had difficulty in freeing trucks urgently needed elsewhere. Grain trucks available outside Timaru were taken into Timaru and aggravated the position. The position would have been chaotic in a bad season. Railway officers in Timaru had been doing their best to meet the demands, but the circumstances had been against them.
