YACHTSMAN DROWNED ATTEMPT TO REACH SHORE ! (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March i 5. A member of the crew of an IdleAlong class yacht which capsized tn Evans Bay about 3.30 p.m. on Saturday was drowned in trying to reach the shore. He was Samuel John Flaws, aged 18. It is believed that the yacht was running before a stiff southerly wind when it capsized. Two other members of the crew were wearing life jackets, but Flaws did not have one on. The accident occurred about 400 yards offshore. Apparently the yacht floated upturned, the crew clinging to the bottom in plain view of watchers ashore for half an hour before the news was communicated to the yacht club and the police. When the rescuers reached the yacht, it was found that the crew had swum for the shore. DEATH OF CRICKET PLAYER Struck on the chest by a ball while playing cricket at Linwood Park on Saturday afternoon, Thomas McClelland, aged 60, of 176 Hereford street, shortly after collapsed and died. McClelland, who was a member of the Working Men's Club team in the Suburban competition, continued to play after he was hit by the ball, but he later left the field to rest, and after about 10 minutes collapsed and died before he could be taken to hospital. An inquest opened before the Coroner (Mr E. C. Levvey) yesterday was adjourned sine die after evidence of identification had been given. FALL FROM HORSE Joan Evans, aged 14, ‘of Redcliffs, fell from a horse on Saturday morning and was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital with concussion. Her condition last evening was given as satisfactory. YOUNG GIRL INJURED Ann Shuttleworth. aged seven, of Spreydon, fell from a swing when she was playing on Saturdaj afternoon at Barrington street park. She was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital with a fractured right thigh bone. Her condition last evening was satisfactory STRUCK BY MOTOR-CAR Thomas Jackson, aged 38. of 58 Manchester street, was struck by a motorcar when he was walking across- the road on Saturday evening. He was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital with a fractured right leg. His condition is satisfactory. 'head injuries Gwendoline Gibbs, aged nine, of Cashmere, suffered head injuries when she fell from her cycle about noon yesterday. She was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital. Her condition is satisfactory. CHILD’S DEATH FROM BURNS Beverly Olwyn Hoyle, aged three, of Halswell Quarries, died on Saturday morning in the Christchurch Public Hospital. She was admitted to hospital on Thursday with severe burns suffered when her dress caught fire while she was standing in front of an electric heater. An inquest was opened on Saturday morning before the Coroner (Mr E. C. Levvey) and adjourned sine die after evidence of identification had been given. SOLDIER KILLED IN TRUCK MISHAP (P.A.) WHANGAREI, March 14. Sergeant Reginald Wilfred Hewetson. aged 22, of Te Kopuru, was killed, and Sergeant Eric Petchel, aged 26. was injured when an Army truck skidded in loos» metal near Hikurangi on Friday evening. Sergeant Hewetson was pinned under the car. and was not extracted for 20 minutes.
