MILITARY TACTICS
Sir,—The Japanese are the masters of a new type of warfare. The sooner our military men realise this, the better. Sloping arms and 1914-18 tactics will not help; we must have immediately well-trained guerrillas, for one thing. The most outstanding tactic of the Japanese is infiltration. Groups, well armed, must meet the enemy over a wide area. A single defence line will not do. The need is for sup'er means of communication. The Aurtralians in Malaya suffered because they lacked it. What is being done with all \the transmitters sealed by the police? Could not these be used to establish communications between various selected points? The time has come for New Zealand to become a fighting force. Every fit man should have a rifle. If the Japanese come every one killed is a point for a New Zealand victory. All should be fighters, then E.P.S. and other workers.—Yours, etc., E Greymouth, March 11, 1942. [The letter was referred to headquarters of the Southern Military District. It was stated that there was no comment to make.]
