RUGBY FOOTBALL

MANY PLAYERS SERVING IN FORCES

Prospects for the coining season's Rugby in Canterbury, with the certainty of many more players being in camp, are briefly discussed in the report of the Canterbury Rugby Football Union to be presented to the annual meeting on March 24. "The 1941 season was more difficult than the previous year," says the report, "because of the increased drain on our players for military duties. It is evident that the coming year will bring further complications as more players go into the various branches of the services. Every endeavour will be made to provide men in the services with Rugby during 1042. and players from the various camps will be welcomed In the different grades. "Many of last year's Rugby players are now in uniform, and we are proud of the way In which Rugby players have ansfvered their country’s call. Several have made the supreme sacrifice, and this committee wishes to record its sincere sympathy with their bereaved relatives and friends.

"The accounts show a loss on the year’s working of £241 8s Id, This figure includes depreciation on the Rugby Park stand which has been charged in the accounts for the first time. The amount written off under this heading is £135 17s 6d.

"Interest accrued due to our ground fund trustees has also been brought into account amounting to £lOl. 33s 4d, so that the year cannot be considered as unsatisfactory when it. is remembered that, patriotic fund grants, etc., amounted to £291 19s 7d." Two notices of motion are to be presented at the meeting, one sponsored by Mr St, J. J. Dunne designed to cancel one of the accident fund regulations because of the changes brought about by the Social Security Act, and the other, put forward on behalf of the management committee, aimed at giving the committee the right to appoint a selector or selection committees. This right is now vested in club and subunion delegates.
