GREY BAR SHOALING
EFFECT OF BEACH GROYNES Reporting to the monthly meeting of the Grcymouth Harbour Board, the Engineer (Mr D, S. Kennedy) stated that the recent heavy shoaling on the outer bar md. more recently, on the inner bar. had raised some doubt as to the effect the groynes on the Blaketown beach were having on the prevailing conditions. All the groynes were now completely buried, except for a few feet at the sea end of thg one nearest the south breakwater. It was apparent that the low water mark had advanced considerably toward the end of the south breakwater, probably about 100 to 120 feet. It might become necessary, said Mr Kennedy, to consider the removal of one or more of the groynes if the conditions became any worse. The position was now being carefully watched. Dealing with .he north breakwater, Mr Kennedy stated that it could now be fairly said that the change to heavy concrete blocks in construct 1 a work was now proving, to a major extent, a means of stabilising the end of the breakwater. By the system now evolved, the handling of 80 to 100-lon blocks had become simple.
