TURF GOSSIP

At Trentham All the Riccarton horses accepted io r at Trentham to-morrow are on the scene with the exception of Atreus and Fur Coat, who are booked to be taken up to-night. Fur Coat has been suffer, ing from soreness of late, and his departure was delayed from Wednesday in case he was not right for the trip. Favourable Going Though heavy rain fell at Trentham on Tuesday afternoon and at night, the tracks yesterday morning were drying quickly, and the course proper bore little evidence of any soaking. If the weather holds fine, the going to-mor-row should, be firm and fast. Change of Ownership Daljarrock will run in new colours on Saturday, in those of Mr H. W. Moss, who formerly raced Trebor and Boomerang.

Strong Claims The Riccarton pair, Sally Lunn and Good Scout, should take a prominent part in the decision of the Champion Hack Handicap at Trentham to-mor-row. Sally Lunn, who has won over 104 furlongs at Wingatui and nine furlongs at Riccarton in her last two starts has done well and has worked in encouraging style since arriving at Tren. tham. She now has a stone more to carry, but is certain to be a firm favourite. She will be ridden by G. P. Spratt. Good Scout, who will again have the services of S. Green, impressed as a stayer by his win last Saturday. His best work has been done over the concluding stages of all his races. With a stone concession from Sully Lunn he is certain to be dangerous.

Highly Rated Last Effort, owned and trained by Mrs J. Pankhurst, at Riccarton, was nominated for three races at Trentham but has been paid up for in the Highweight event, in which he will be ridden by R. Mackie. Last Effort was expected to show up at Motukarara, but was not right on the day owing to knocking himself about a good deal when running in a paddock during a recent storm. He is a most promising young horse, and even if he fails tomorrow he should benefit by the travelling and racing. . , Old-established Race

Racegoers are promised another treat at Trentham to-morrow when they will see Kindergarten in action under handicap conditions. Conceding from nine to 44 pounds to 18 opponents in the Thompson Handicap, Kindergarten will be an outstanding favourite in spite of his big impost, but he is certain to be tested by horses such as Sir Beau, Route March, Salutation, Premature, and Arctic Dawn. All are receiving substantial concessions for horses of proved class, but Kindergarten will still be expected by most people to survive the test. Weigh i Record

If Kindergarten wins he will not establish a weight-carrying record for the race. This stands to the credit of Silver Ring who, in the hands of A. E. Ellis, who will ride Kindergarten, won by a head from Friesland in 1936 with 10-6. This is the only occasion on which a winner of the Thompson Handicap has carried more than 10-0, and in 43 contests horses carrying above 9-0 have won on nine occasions only. Dual Engagements Horses who haVe been accepted for in both the Thompson Handicap and Suburban Handicap include Autolite, Hearth, and Enrich. It is likely that Autolite will run in the six furlongs event, but intentions with the other pair have not been revealed, Winning Form

Among the acceptors for the Belmont Handicap to-morrow is Heroic Star, a four-year-old Vaals gelding, who is raced by Messrs Davis and Nicholson. Heroic Star’s winning performance at Te Rapa last Saturday probably induced his owners to send him down to Trentham for the final day. He won the Buckland Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, with 8-0, beating Prince Rewa 7-9 and his older brother, Vaalstar, 7-11. A month ago Heroic Star won a hack event over six furlongs at Rotorua, but the class was not strong. Good Credentials

Hippodrome, who is top-weight for the Pacific Handicap for two-year-olds 10-morrow, has won only one small race, but earned his weight by two placed performances at the Auckland Cup meeting when he proved himself almost the equal of Beau Vaals and Bonny Pay at level weights. Hippodrome made his debut at Feilding in December, when ho won unexpectedly at long odds in a division of the Oroua Nursery Handicap. At his next start he was beaten a neck and a head by Bonny Pay and Beau Vaals in the' Great Northern Foal Stakes, each carrying 8-10, Later at the meeting, carrying 7-6, he was beaten a neck and half a head by Beau Vaals 7-9 and Indian Princess 7-3. These placings have proved costly to Hippodrome from a handicapping point of view. He is a neatly made gelding by Ringmaster from Drax, dam of the St. Lcger and Manawalu Cup winner. Spiral. He is trained in the same stable as Sir Beau. A Brilliant Sprint

There was a persistent rumour at Trentham yesterday morning that telephonic instructions had been received overnight from the owner of Kindergarten that the horse was not to start in the Thompson Handicap. His trainer, R. S. Bagby, was absent when the message was received from Auckland on Wednesday night. He sprinted Kindergarten over half a mile yesterday morning, and as the horse covered 47 2-ssec against the next best of 49 3-ssec, it vas suggested that Bagby vfeuld not have given his horse such work If he was not to fun t9-im?iTOW. kindergarten’s absence incidentally would mean a much mgie open contest and a corresponding better pool. Going to Ellerslie Salutation will not return with Not Out after to-morrow's racing at Trenthain but will be taken north next week to race at Ellerslie at Easter, her main mission being the Great Northern Oaks. Instructions to this end were given by Mr H. D. Greenwood this

TIMAEU T.C. TO-MORROW’S PROSPECTS With the track in excellent order, there is every prospect of first-class sport at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow. TROTTING NOTES

Timaru Trotting Club The Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow will provide the only interest for light-harness enthusiasts, and well-balanced fields of good quality should provide the best class of racing. The Washdyke track in recent years has provided excellent going, and, while it has never been exceptionally fast, the well-turfed track has encouraged all horses—sound or unsound —to hit out freely. On occasions the club has taken full advantage of the irrigation available, and while the rest of the country has been burnt up, the Timaru track has been a ribbon of green. It is one of the best grass tracks in New Zealand.

Unhoppled Trotters * In the Kingsdown Handicap, a field of 17 trotters does not represent the best class, and Bomber, on 72 yards behind, may have his work cut out to give this field such a start. Loughros, on 24 yards behind, must make a direct appeal, and the Wrack trotter has previously shown a liking for the course. Since his last win there, he has failed rather dismally, but a return to form is due. On his day Loughros is a really good trotter, and his driver, J. Bell, jun., is one of the best reinsmen in New Zealand.

Integrity In his recent racing Integrity has performed in the manner of a coming champion, and only age and experience are needed for his development. In his latest effort at the Banks Peninsula meeting, he was only a head behind the improving Cinchona, at the finish of the Waihora Handicap, and his mile and a half in 3min 21 3-ssec was an outstanding effort. It drew attention to his chances in the Fairlie Handicap at the Timaru meeting tomorrow. He may be a warm favourite. An Early Faviurite Burt Scott is an early favourite for the Timaru Cup. His record is one that justifies this early favourling that has taken place. His record is one that justifies this early favouritism, but Burt Scott is now coming into the better classes and may have to improve on his previous best effort. Gold Pot, Stormtost, Chatmos, and Acuity are all prospects with the race run to suit them. Improvers , , Southland has not been a lucky racehorse, and his prowess cannot be measured by lire amount he has won _in stake money. Bad luck in the running of several races has affected his chances, but the Seadown Handicap at Timaru should provide an excellent chance of victory. Blaydon, now back to form, may be a problem, and Warfield and Indian Clipper are others to be considered. Juvenile Pacers The Timaru Nursery Stakes field is a big one, and the form of the youngsters engaged is not known. Free Again, the sister to Pacing Power, is full of promise, and may be the favourite, while Lucky Gem, also in £. B. Berry’s stable, will be a worthy second string. Following are the horses still engaged;— Sand Maid, by Sandydale—Midshipmaid; Pocket Book, by Gold Paper—Nancy Bingen; Air Crew, bv Gold Paper—Amy Audubon; Air Speed, by Jack Potts—Swift Pointer; Lucky Gem, by Lucky Jack—Sea Pearl; Gold Sheik, by Sandydale— Mary de Oro; Paper Man, by Gold Paper—Eva Truman; Bonny Volo, by Lusty Volo—Becky de Oro; Captain Morant. by Rey de Oro—Bonny Logan; Stuart Lee, by Quite Sure —Dora Parrish; Free Again, by Jack Potts —Free Advice: Tam O’Shanter, by U. Scott— Escapade: Abbey Volo, by Abbedale— Widow Volo; Nola Scott, by U. Scott —Grattan Lass: Safely First, by Quite Sure—Marie Celeste; Convmcer. by Quite Sure—Sundock; Single Choice, by Bill B.—Bonny Freda; and Final Fancy, by Nelson Derby—Sally Audubon. Overdue , . Westcliff and Royal Worthy have not raced well in their most recent engagements, but an early return to form is probable. It may come in the Temqka Handicap, in which Milestone may provide strong opposition.

The Sprinters 4 The class sprinters will contest the Washdyke Handicap, and the early ■favourite is Ronald Logan. Bronze Eagle will make his first appearance under V. Alborn’s care, and he will have a strong following, but with Springfield Globe at bis best, a handicap of 30 yards would not bo too big for him. This should provide (he most exciting race of the day.

A small field in the Wai-iti Handicap will give Lizzie Woods a chance to prove her class, and, patiently handled, she may improve on her already good record. Battle Colours may prove formidable, although his form has not been always good.

week, and F. Roberts will go north with the filly. Riders at Trentham Some riding engagements announced at Trentham yesterday were:—D. Redstone, Pay Roll; P. Burgess, Master Lackham, Flying Hawk, Kentucky, Kevin; N. Vaughan, The Champ, Voltaire, Arctic Dawn. Triple Crown, Autoscore, Lotto; J. Girth, Moutoa Bond; D. Bush, Madam Rachel; L. Galvin, Surveyor General: A. E. Ellis, Martene. Kindergarten, Balblair; S. Green, Salutation, Jolly Ruler, King Herod, Good Scout; B. Morris, Sir Beau, Hippodrome; R, Hawes, Makaroa; P. gpratt, Sally Lynn, Fur Coat, R. Mackia, Hearth, tot BRoil; JWaUher, day thread; L. J. SUi», 5»Ue Fox. Autolite, Gunyah; A.
