OBITUARY

DR. CHARLES A. PATERSON (O R.) TIMARU. March S.

Dr. Charles A. Paterson, a wellknown medical practitioner at Timaru, died to-day. He was born at Bahia, Brazil, in 1877, his father being physician to the English colony there. Dr. Paterson received his medical education in Edinburgh and commenced practice at Pleasant Point, South Canterbury, remaining there until 1919. In that year he moved to Timaru, where ho practised until last year, when he retired because of ill-health.

Dr. Paterson represented (he Pleasant Point Town District on the South Canterbury Hospital Board from 1911 to 1920, and was again on the board from 1929 to 1941 as representative of the Timaru Borough. Ho was an original member of the Automobile Association (South Canterbury), having attended the first meeting on November 29, 1913. He was president of this association from 1923 to 1926. and during part of this time was also vicepresident of the South Island Motor Union.

Dr. Paterson was a prominent member of the South Canterbury Club, having been president for two years. Dr. Paterson was married in 1904 to Miss Beatrice Kippenbcrger, of Christchurch. He is survived by his wife, two sons. Private C. Paterson, now a prisoner of war in Germany, and Private Derek Paterson, serving in (he Middle East, and three daughters. Mrs R. Dawson Welsh, Wellington, Mrs F. M. Riley, and Mrs O. T, Harris.
