DIVISIONAL CAVALRY INSPECTED
GENERAL VISITS DESERT ENCAMPMENT [N.Z.E.F. Official News Service.] CAIRO, March 4, Lined up in squadron formation at a desert encampment, the New Zealand Divisional Cavalry was inspected by Maior-General Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C., this morning. It w r as the regiment wduch had done such fine work in the Libyan campaign, culminating in an important and prominent part in the capture of Eardia. and the release of more than 1000 New Zealand prisoners. It was this regiment also which was first, to contact the German thrust in Greece, later fighting, many as infantrymen, in the battle for Crete. This morning, clad in bahlcdress and black berets, they gave an impression o' smartness, confidence, and efficiency. There was the precision of trained riflemen in their musketry movements, them rifles moving as one in the General Salute as Major-General Freyhcrg stepped from his car on to the parade ground. In a nearby wadi stood (he carriers and light tanks, with the sands of Libya still on the wheels. These were some of the fast little armoured units the cavalry used to such advantage and to such discomfiture the enemy as B Division pushed deep into hostile territory. Inspecting the -qu-adi r ns in turn, the General occasionally stopped to speak to men. Later the regiment marched past, first in squadrons, then in fours, swinging through a cloud of sand as they moved off the parade ground.
