AUSTRALIAN ATTITUDE TO BRITAIN
“TOO MUCH UNFAVOURABLE CRITICISM ” (P.A.) GISBORNE, February 9. Among a number of messages congratulating him on his cablegram to Mr Winston Churchill, expressing admiration of his inspiring leadership and confidence in his ability to lead the Empire to victory, the Mayor (Mr N. H. Bull) has received one from an Australian resident, who deplores the attitude of Australians towards Britain. “There is too much unfavourable criticism of Britain in this country, and a section of the people, including members of the present Government, appear hostile to everything English,” states the writer, who refers to the many industrial disputes, and states that thousands of able-bodied young men were to be seen a) race meetings. "Yet Australia criticises the conduct of the war by Britain, where manpower is conscripted and the people suffer many hardships,” he adds.
