NEW TELEPHONE CONNEXIONS
MINISTER’S STATEMENT OF
REASON
tP.A.) WELLINGTON. January 23,
The Postmaster-General (the Hon. P. C. Webb) said to-night in Wellington that there seemed an impression in some quarters that the recent restriction of new telephone connexions was the outcome of a mere "red-tape decision rather than a very necessary war-time precaution. Mr Webb said that the quantity of telephone equipment in the Dominion was not large, and to ensure that stocks would be available for the armed forces in the event of an attack it became necessary to close down completely in the meantime on all new connexions not essential to the State in the present emergency. Otherwise ht taid, the Government would be guilty of a grave lack of* sense of responsibility to the people of New Zealand. Mr Webb added that a large quantity of telephone equipment and material was on order, but manufacturing and shipping difficulties made its arrival irregular. However, the P 1,65 ® 1 " restrictions would be relaxed when warranted.
