AUSTRALIANS' FIRST ACTION IN MALAYA CANBERRA, January 16. The Australian Army Minister (Mr F. M. Forde) said tonight that the latest reports from Malaya were that the A.I.F. had in Hided heavy casualties on the Japanese. The Australians' i asualties were very light, and they were more than holding their Ofvn. A Singapore message says that Major-General Bennett, commander of the A.1.F., stated that hj: the first action of Australian advanced units against the Japanese the A.I.F. casualties were very light, and at least 200 of the'enemy were killed. LIBYAN CAMPAIGN LONDON, January 16. To-day's communique from Cairo says that little change is reported from the El Agheila area. British mobile columns near the coast are slowly moving onward against stiff opposition uver country which has been heavily mined. Free French forces have arrived in the Halfayij area to take part in the operations'.
