LORRIES FOR ARMY
* SOME APPEALS TO BE REVIEWED
MINISTER’S REQUEST TO
OWNERS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 16. In view of the urgency of obtaining sufficient lorries for the Army, licensing authorities have been asked to review some of the appeals previously allowed. This was announced to-night by the Minister for Transport (the Hon. R. Semple). In an appeal to owners to co-oper-ate in providing the requisite number of vehicles Mr Semple said that 34 representative committees appointed for the purpose had recommended some 7000 vehicles, of which 6000 had been passed as mechanically fit. These were impressed, but the owners had the right to appeal to the licensing authorities, which had considered 2000 appeals, of which 1200 had been granted.
The Minister added that unless the owners were a little more generous and helpful, it would be difficult to meet the Army’s demand. In view of the prior recommendations of the committees there should have been fewer appeals lodged. _
