VICEREGAL GREYMOUTH, January 16. Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Newall, with Captain C. J. Holland-Martin, left Greymouth this morning by train for Hokitika, After breakfast in the ViceRegal car, their Excellencies were visited by the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), and the Town Clerk (Mr G. Coles). Later in the morning they visited the Kanieri and Rimu dredges, and on their return to Hokitika the Mayor and Mayoress lunched with their Excellencies. This afternoon they visited the Westland Hospital, and were later guests at an informal afternoon tea in the Soldiers’ Hall, where they met members of local bodies. This evening his Excellency inspected a parade of Returned Soldiers, Home Guard, and E.P.S. personnel, a guard of honour being provided by Boy Scouts. At 8 p.m. their Excellencies were tendered a civic welcome in the Soldiers’ Hall. Brigadier O. H. Mead, C.8., D.S.O. (commanding the Southern Military District) has been on a tour of inspection in Area 9 (Nelson-Marl-borough), and is expected to return to Christchurch to-day. Major E. J. Anderson, M.C., has been appointed officer commanding the 3th Light Armoured Fighting Vehicle Regiment (0.M.R.). Major Anderson has already seen service with B Force in Samoa during the present war, and on his return to the Dominion, pending his reappointment to an armed unit, he was appointed officer commanding the Flagstaff Battalion of the Home Guard. In November last Major Anderson left to undergo a special course of training at the new Military College at Palmerston North. Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland returned to Christchurch from Wellington by the steamer express yesterday morning. Colonel G. E. F. Kingscote, Christchurch District Commander of the Home Guard, returned to Christchurch by the steamer express yesterday morning. Mr H St. J. Somerset, general manager, and Mr A. J. C. Bult, business manager, of Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia, Ltd., have been appointed to the directorate of the company. Mr John Farrell, representing J. C. Williamson Theatres, is at present visiting Christchurch. Mr J. R. Keenan, for the last six years manager of the Wanganui branch of the D.1.C., has been appointed manager of Rendells, Ltd., Auckland. He will take up his new appointment in April. Mr Keenan was for some time assistant manager of the D.I.C. in Christchurch.
