TUKF GOSSIP

Change of Ownership The three-year-old fillv Hincpo, by Nightmarch from the Chief Ruler mare Azalea, has been sold by her breeder-trainer, P. V. Mason, to a patron of A. McAulay’s stable at Ricearton. A sister to Haerepo and Omapo, who have done well in Australia since being sold by Mason. Hinepo has yet to win a race, but has shown encouraging form in her limited amount of racing. Success in Melbourne A recent winner in Melbourne was Mercury Bay, a four-year-old gelding by Myosotis from Glowlight, by Silverado from Limelight, bred by Messrs J. W. and L. W. Storry, of Christchurch, and sold by them at Trentham to his present owner, the Melbourne trainer-owner, L. Robertson, for 280 guineas. The race was over a mile and a half, and Mercury Bay, who was favourite, won by more than four lengths. This was his first success, and it also marked the initial win for one of Glowlight’s progeny since that mare was acquired by the Messrs Storry. Glowlight at present has a filly foal by Solicitor General, and this season visited Foxbridge. Joyous, another from Glowlight in the same ownership, is represented in this year’s Trentham sale by a colt Broiefort. She has a filly foal at foot by Golden Eagle, and this season visited, Battle Song. Messrs Storry also entered for Trentham a colt by Lang Bian from Romarin, by Robespierre from Limelight, but he was not sent up. Romarin visited Broiefort this term, and Lady Zephyr, by Robespierre from Lady Minerva, the property of the same stud, was mated with Battle Song, Lady Zephyr has a filly foal at foot by Solicitor General. Astral Flame The Grand National Steeplechase winner, Astral Flame, has been put into work again by Mr W. E. Hazlett. The six-year-old son of Colonel Cygnus is in great condition to start on another preparation. ■ Spendthrift has been in work a short time and is being taken along quietly in his training. Noko took no harm from his racing during the holidays, and he will probably make his next appearance at the Dunedin Cup meeting. The Sir Simper gelding was unbeaten in his three starts over hurdles during the holidays, and looks certain to take the highest honours as a jumper. Novice Jumper One of the most promising novice hurdlers seen out during the holidays was the Nigger Minstrel gelding Gold Robe, who is owned by the Dunedin sportsman, Mr T. Muir. _ Gold Robe was third and second in his two starts over hurdles at the Invercargill meeting, and was unlucky in running up against the outstanding Noko on the second day of the meeting. Highly Rated Sing Sing changed hands after the Invercargill meeting, and her now owner is Mr R. Cruickshank. of Invercargill, who has put her in R. E. McLollan's stable. It is understood that the price was 700 guineas. Sing Sing, who is by Salmagundi, has won at her three starts this season, and is highly regarded here. Spanish Lad The Invercargill Cup winner, Spanish Lad, has been spelling since the local meeting, but will resume work next week. When he won the Invercargill Cup he was held on lease by Mr H. Mason, with the right of purchase, but was bought outright after the race. TROTTING NOTES Gold Bar's Breeding Free Holmes holds more than a passing interest in the performances of Gold Bar, for while he imported Grattan Loyal, sire of the crack pacer, he also brought from • America Rey de Oro, the sire of its dam. Imperial Gold, and granddam, Imperial Pointer, who was by Logan Pointer. Imperial Pointer and Imperial Gold were both bred by Mr J. Cooper, of Cheviot, but Alan Holmes bred Gold Bar and not F. Holmes, as is generally supposed. Mr Cooper also bred Camera, one of the biggest horses raced in the last 20 years, and Holmes's success with this gelding paved the way for his possession of Gold Bar. When Mr Cooper handed Camera over to Holmes he said that if Camera could win a race he would eive Holmes a sister to the gelding. This proved to be Imperial Gold, who showed great speed on the track, but did not race well. Holmes then mated Imperial Gold with Grnttan Loval and Gold Bar was the result. Gold Bar has served 40 mares this season, the number including Daisv Pointer, the dam of Frisco Boy and 'Frisco Ladv. The brilliant pacer comes from a long line of good racehorses, for his granddam. Imnerial Pointer, was a sister to Our Nurse, ihc dam of several good performers, including Probationer <3min 16scc) and Sure (2min 47 l-ssec). The fastest pacer bred in New Zealand and a wellmannered horse. Gold Bar may leave a great line of racehorses. Grade Fields , Grade Fields is not an everyday trotter, but when she elects to trot she shows more speed than most horses racing to-day. In the care of R. Townley she may be prominent at Hmaru on Saturday. Our Jewel , ~ , _. Since coming from Auckland Our Jewel has not performed up to expectations and he is hardly likely to carry support at Timaru. A Prospect . . , , M. Holmes drove Lightning Lady at Addington in the absence of W. K. laitcrson, who was engaged at Greymouth. Lightning Lady has plenty ot speed and is due to win a race.
