MENTIONED IN DISPATCHES

Lieutenant-Colonel J. R. Page, who has been mentioned in dispatches, is the son of Mr and Mrs John Page, Invercargill. He has a fine record at sport and has had a brilliant military career. He gained the rank of lieu-tenant-colonel early in 1940 at the age of 31. On leaving school he was sent to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, with a New Zealand military scholarship and after 18 months’ training he joined the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He returned to New Zealand in 1929 and joined the New Zealand Defence Permanent Staff, holding the rank of lieutenant. He represented Wellington Province and the North Island at Rugby, and in 1931 gained All Black honours, playing for New Zealand against Australia at Auckland. In 1932 and 1934 he was a member of the New Zealand teams that toured Australia. He was vicecaptain of the 1934 team. He travelled with the All Blacks to Great Britain in 1935, but an injury prevented him from playing.
