MEMBER RESIGNS

DECISION TO CONTROL FARM MR DAVEY WITHDRAWS FROM MANPOWER COMMITTEE (0.R.) ASHBURTON, January 15. Mr A. J. Davey. of Temuka, who has been a member of the South Canterbury Manpower Committee since it was formed about September. 1940, has resigned to take over active control of his farm, because his sons have joined the armed forces. At the conclusion of his last sitting of the committee at Ashburton today, Mr Davey said that he would now have to give more active attention to his farm, because one son was in an overseas camp and the other would go into camp on Monday. He regretted having to withdraw from the committee when it was entering on a more difficult period of its work. He felt that if he did not withdraw, he would have to lodge an appeal for a single man when married men were being called up, and he did not want to take that step. He thanked Messrs K. Mackenzie (chairman). H. Badham (employees’ representative), and R. S. Gillies (secretary and representative of the Crown) for their co-operation during his term on the committee.

Mr Mackenzie said the committee regretted" that Mr Davey had to resign. Mr Davey had been in public life in South Canterbury for marry years, and had ably represented the farmers of South Canterbury and Ashburton County on the committee. He had been particularly fair in all his dealings with appeal?.
