DEFENCE OF IRAQ AND IRAN

Command Passes To Auchinleck

ANNOUNCEMENT BY WAR OFFICE

(8.0. W.) ftUGBY. January 18. The War Office announces: “It has been decided that the command of all British and Indian land forces In Iraq and Iran shall pass from the Com* mander-in-Chief, India, to the Com* mander-in-Chlef, Middle East (General Sir Claude Auchinleck). “This change is necessitated by recent developments in the course of the war and is in accordance with the

policy of ensuring a co-ordinated com* mand in each strategic area of major importance. “The position thus is that the out* ward defences of India, both east and west, are in the hands of two distinguished soldiers (General Sir Archibald Wavell and General Auchinleck), who both very recently have been com-manders-in-cnief, India, and are therefore in an exceptional position to view the situation with full appreciation of India's point of view.”
