Chinese Spokesman’s Statement NEED TO RETAIN SINGAPORE (Received January 14, 7 p.m.) CHUNGKING, January 13. China is ready to throw all her resources of manpower into the struggle now spread across the South Seas, said a Chinese spokesman. He added: Russia, seemingly remote, is also, vitally interested, as .her supply route through the Persian Gulf is involved "We have reason for confidence the great battle of the South Seas, as reinforcements are on the way. A. Chinese spokesman in Chungking said earlier that the united nations must retain Singapore and the Nethcilands East Indies. His comment coincided with Chinese press criticism of British and American policy in Europe first in Pacific later. The press contended that it was a sheer fallacy to expect Japan, entrenched in Malaya and Netherlands East Indies, to collapse if Hitlei The 'spokesman added that there had been some debate on the relative importance of fighting Hitler or the Japanese. Such debates were idle, since all were agreed on the importance of Singapore and the Netherlands East Indies, the Japanese capture of which would nullify the Allied blockade and give Japan resources which would enable her to carry on vigorously and indefinitely.
