EXPERTS NEEDED
SUGGESTION OF LEADER OF OPPOSITION (PA.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 14. The recent' controversy over the correct technique in extinguishing incendiary bombs makes it imperative that expert advice should be obtained." said Mr S. G. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, in an interview before his departure for the north tonight. “I suggest,” he said, that the Government at once cable the British Government to send out a number of men who have had practical experience of emergency duties during air raids in England. These officers could take charge of our airraid precautions and thus ensure the greatest possible protection for the public." , ... Mr Holland said that the position at present was quite unsatisfactory. One man who should know said that a bucket of water was the best thing. Another, with experience in England, contended that sand was the best. How was the general public to decide? The public should have the assurance that the methods adopted were those successful under fire, and not those based on theory or demonstrated in 1 conditions which bore no resemblance to the real thing. -Even to-day,” said Mr Holland, “after hundreds of air raids, new ideas and methods are still being adopted in England. It is the duty of the responsible authorities in New Zealand to profit from what England has learned, and see to it that the most up-to-date and efficient methods are employed here.”
