LABOUR ON FARMS
♦ — “ DRIFTED TO CRITICAL STAGE ” (P.A.) NELSON, January 13. The Motueka-Riwaka branch of the Farmers’ Union held a special meeting to discuss relieving the shortage of labour on farms. The following resolution was carried unanimously:— “The farmers of the Motueka and Riwaka districts feel that the relationship between the primary producer and the military services has drifted to a critical stage in recent months and the country is rapidly finding itself unable to provide the normal requirements of foodstuffs. “It calls on the authorities to realise the need for the retention of farm labour on the land if it is to ward off serious economic trouble, especially loi the next and following years.” Speakers emphasised the gravity of the situation and said it was the duty of the Farmers’ Union to draw the attention of the people to the position. Already there was a shortage of vegetables and the position would grow worse unless there were adequate labour.
