TURF GOSSIP

Summer Meeting at Motukarara The Canterbury Jockey Club has received permission from the Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) to hold its summer meeting on the Motukarara racecourse on Saturday, February 7. The programme will be the same as that issued some weeks back when the meeting was expected to be at Riccarton, and as the Motukarara racecourse provides excellent going, as well as plenty of room for even big fields, the response of owners is not likely to be affected by the change, which was made necessary by the almost total occupation by the military of the buildings and grounds of the Riccarton racecourse, Otautau R.C. Meeting The Otautau Racing Club’s annual meeting, to have been field on January 31, has been abandoned because of transport difficulties.—P.A. A Long Lapse When Classform won the Aldworth Stakes on the second day of the Marton meeting she recorded her first win for 21 months. She was a brilliant three-year-old, but went wrong at the end of that season and did not race last year. She is on the minimum in the Wellington Cup. This mare is closely inbred to Boniform, her sire. Inflation, being by Paper Money, from Fleeting by Boniform, and her dam, Spearform, by Greyspear from Merriform by Boniform. Fast Mile Gallops Some of the fastest miles recorded in New Zealand have been run on the right-hand course at EUerslie, and on tracks generally in use. Thespian put up Imin 36 3-ssec, and this was later equalled by Hunting Cry. Courtcraft reduced it to Imin 36sec, Smoke Screen made a further cut by doing Imin 35 3-ssec, and Sir Beau equalled it at the Auckland Cup meeting. The fastest mile at Riccarton is the Imin 37 2-ssec put up by Catalogue and Ruatiti, and the Trentham record is held by Reremoana, Autopsy, and Oratory, at Imin 37isec. Since 1913 the King’s Plate winners have all broken Imin 40sec, except on one occasion. Well Placed at Trentham When Enrich won the Stewards’ Handicap in November, 1940, he carried 7-13 and beat Sir Beau (8-3) by two lengths in Imin 10 3-ssec, and followed that success up by winning the Derby in the record time of 2min 31 3-ssec, Beau Leon and Sir Beau being third and fourth respectively. In nine subsequent starts that season Enrich won once, over seven furlongs at Carterton, and was twice placed third. This season the Safari—Sight Draft stallion has been placed four times out of a dozen starts, and when he finished second to Premature over six furlongs at Fcilding about six weeks ago it was claimed that he was returning to his three-year-old form. He was not a starter in the Railway Handicap, and with only 7-8 to carry at Trentham next week is likely to be one of the early fancies. Enrich is a brother to Globe Trotter, their dam, Sight Draft, being by Paper Money from Gazeworthy by Roseworthy. Wellington Cup Contests The first race for the Wellington Cup was run in 1874, and won by Castaway, ridden by Jimmy Cotton, who in those days was one of the best-known jockeys in Otago. Since 1900 it has not been a good race for the top weights, and no fewer than 25 of the winners since then have carried less than 8-0. Advance, winner of the 1903 cup, carried 10-4, and holds the weightcarrying record. Other winners that have carried 9-0 or over are Achilles 9-4 in 1907. Compris 9-0 in 1932, and Vintage 9-9 in 1935. When Compris won in 2min 29scc he established the time record for the race. This performance is not recorded in the time records for the Dominion, as some time afterwards it was found that the distances on the Trentham course were not correct. Since Oratress dead-heated with Kilmoon in the 1920 contest Queen of Song (1936) is the only mare who has been successful. TROTTING NOTES Meeting Abandoned Owing to the total occupation by the military of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s course, the meeting arranged for January 24 and 31 has been abandoned. Engaged at Timaru Cold Steel, a winner at the Hororata meeting, will have his next chance in the Salisbury Handicap, at the Timaru meeting on Saturday. The Key de Oro gelding has come along nicely in his racing, and may develop into a more than useful pacer. Castle Blaney When Castle Blaney won the Duvauchelle Handicap at the Banks Peninsula meeting on November 1, he paid a big price, and an easy win by 10 lengths suggested that he Was something above the average. He has failed to reproduce this form, but in the Salisbury Handicap at Timaru he will be given his chance. He is an aged gelding and commenced racing late in life. Disappointing Kid Wolf and Single Star let their backers down on the second day of the Canterbury Park meeting, and the heavy state of the track was all against them. Kid Wolf was nominated for the Farewell Handicap, the mile saddle race at Timaru next Saturday, and in the hands of P. Gallagher he will be given every chance. Gallagher was successful in the sulky on the opening day at Canterbury Park with Manian, but in saddle the best he could do was to ride Happy Locanda into second and third places. Happy Locanda has been most consistent this season, for while he has won one race he has filled minor places on seven occasions. Mountain Dell Dead The death is reported of Mountain Dell, one of the best pacing mares to race in the Dominion. By Blue Mountain King from Whispering Bell, Mountain Dell was bred by Messrs A. O. and J. Hill, of Epsom, who sold her for £lO to Mr H, Mitchell, for whom she won many good handicaps before being purchased by Mr G. J. Barton. When retired, Mountain Dell was acquired by Mr G. Lancaster for breeding purposes, and the mare died foaling to Sandydale.
