TARAKAN CAPTURED LONDON, January 13. To-day's communique from Batavia admits the surrender of : the Dutch garrison on the island of Tarakan. It says that the battle for this rich oil-bearing island ofT the coast of Borneo was concluded in the face of heavy odds and that a small part of the garrison managed to escape to the mainland. It adds that the conquest was very costly to the Japanese. SOU..UM IN BRITISH HANDS ’ The communique issued tu-day hv British General Headquarters : in Cairo says that the Transvaal Scottish Regiment yesterday stormed and captured Solium, taking about 350 prisoners, of whom more than half are Germans. It adds that Imperial mrces yesterday made consiclori able progress towards El Agheila, and that the advance guard has reached the road running south from El Aghcila to Vlarada, which appears to be the line on which the enemy is proparing to make a stand.
