RZHEV BY-PASSED; OREL CUT OFF
(Received January 13,11 p.m.) (U.P.A.) LONDON, January 13. In north Russia, Soviet forces have a new thrust south of Lake Ilmen, between Lenin* grad and Moscow. This attack, in a sector which hitherto has been quiet, is admitted in the latest German communique. This reports fighting in the Valdai Hills. The Soviet thrust here represents a new danger to Hitler’s forces on the Leningrad front, already being pushed back along the Volkhov river. General Zhukov’s pincers movement on the Moscow front is continuing, and its speed, according to the Kuibishev radio, is increasing. The northern claw of the movement is reported to have bypassed Rzhev, and the southern claw is halfway along the road to Vyazma. In their southern drivei the Russians have, surrounded the important town of Orel. Earlier reports suggested that the Germans were preparing their people for the news that Orel had been abandoned.
