EIRE AND THE WAR
“TERRITORY NOT FOR SALE ” STATEMENT BY MR DE VALERA (Received January 13, 10 p.m.) DUBLIN, January 12. Mr de Valera denied that Eire had secretly bargained with any country. He added: “When the war started I said that not an inch of our territory was for sale. I hoped that would be a sufficient assertion. We will defend ourselves against attack from any quarter. “We did and are doing our best to get arms. What arms we get will be secured on the understanding that they may be used to defend our territory against any aggressor, no matter who it might be. “We do not intend to enter this war if it, can possibly be avoided, and we will avoid it unless we are attacked.’* The diplomatic correspondent of the Press Association has learned on good authority that Britain has not submitted to Eire any new proposals for the use of naval and air bases in Eire. There are no immediate indications that America’s entry into the war has caused any change in the policy of Mr de Valera, who remains determined to keep Eire from war. He shows no signs that he is any more willing to hand over bases to the United States than to Britain.
