FLAXMILL FOR WESTPORT

GOVERNMENT TO START INDUSTRY (P.A.) WESTPORT, January 13. The Hon. P. C. Webb advises that the Government has approved the opening of a flaxmill at Westport and that the supervision of the work has been entrusted to a flax management committee under the Department of Industries and Commerce. Immediate steps are being taken to visit a site and ascertain the most suitable location on which to erect the factory. The committee will visit Westport next week for this purpose. With the cutting off of supplies of hemp from Manila and the Dutch East Indies, there will be an increasing call for the supply of phormium tenax, but comparatively few areas of any size are available from Which to obtain suitable green leaf for the production of the fibre. It is proposed to extend further on the West Coast, after it has been ascertained that the mill at Westport can operate economically and dispose of its whole output. ,
