— * — CENTRE TO HOLD CARNIVAL WATER POLO CONTEST ABANDONED After discussing the difficulties of carrying on men’s swimming in the senior grade for the rest of the season, the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association decided at a meeting last evening to conduct a centre carnival on January 24 to ascertain the support likely to be afforded at carnivals in the future. It was agreed to reshuffle championship events which have been allotted to clubs, and to hold a section of these championships at the carnival. . Stating that the position was not at all satisfactory,” and that it was "getting steadily worse,” the secretary (Miss D Brown) reported on the water-polo competition. On the last games night only one full team participated, two withdrew, and one club had only one swimmer at the baths, she said. During the five rounds, a smalt band of enthusiasts played to make up sides, often taking part in three of four matches a night to give other club members a game, stated Miss Brown. She added that the competition, which was not covering expenses, was not doing the sport a great deal of good. It was decided on. her recommendation to discontinue the water polo competition. J The C *Territor!«l Association of Canterbury wrote asking permission for territorials on leave to participate m sports at city baths, and asked for dates of swimming meetings in future. Peimission was granted, and it was agreed to supply the desired list. Mr V. G. Spiller presided.
