FINLAND AND RUSSIA

ARMISTICE SAID TO BE IMMINENT PERSISTENT REPORTS FROM HELSINKI LONDON, January 9. In a surprisingly candid editorial, the Helsinki newspaper “Uusi Suomi” declares: “Finland is not afraid of realities but she cannot much longer bear a costly war. Therefore, now, after attaining her strategic goal, why continue an increasingly unpopular war?” Reports from Helsinki received in the United States insist that the conclusion of a Russian-Finnish armistice is imminent. This move is supported by the vast majority of the Finns, while it is opposed only by a few politicians and militarists, particularly Field Marshal Mannerheim.
