SOLDIERS’ PARCELS SYSTEM

♦ WAIMAIRI COUNCILLOR’S OBJECTION

Objection to the system of sending unaddressed parcels to soldiers overseas, on the ground that the money could be devoted to other purposes more helpful to the men, was expressed by Cr. J. Halligan at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council last evening. To record his objection, he voted against the council’s decision to pay £IOO to the patriotic fund from provision made on the estimates for that purpose. Cr. Halligan said there was no sentimental value to the parcels, and there was much duplication. He suggested that they should leave the sending of parcels to those personally interested in the men. Disagreement with that view was expressed by Cr. W. G. Chapman, who said many men received only the parcels sent by patriotic committees. Cr. Halligan: It would be better to send "chits” that the boys could cash at the canteen. The Government had refused to adopt that system, replied Cr. Chapman.
