USE FOR HOLIDAY MONEY
NATIONAL SAVINGS A 5,,." .. INVESTMENT “As many people are cancelling holidays because of petrol and rail restrictions, they might apply part of their holiday money, or all of it, to investment in national savings, and .enjoy their holidays after victory,” said Mr W. B. Russell, Christchurch national savings organiser, when discussing the National Savings Week campaign yesterday. To-day is the fourth day of the special appeal, and already Christchurch is more than two-thirds of the way towards achieving its weekly quota of £9313. Monddy added £2429 to the carry-over of £1939 from last week, and Tuesday a further £1592. Yesterday’s total is expected to be near Tuesday’s. A city firm has issued a challenge to others to help Christchurch set a new savings record this week. The sum of £250 will be devoted by this firm to the purchase of bonds if nine others will do the same. Six firms have already accepted, making £ISOO in hand. The national savings campaign' is gaining momentum as the public realise the importance of this form of war effort. On May 7 last, there were 309 groups in Christchurch, with 7026 group depositors, 5344 individual depositors, and 12,370 accounts in all. At December 7, there were 665 groups, 12,680 group depositors, 8516 individual depositors, and 21,196 accounts in all. Each day brings an increase in the humber of group depositors, the teal backbone of the scheme.
