SUMNER BOROUGH COUNCIL
PROVISION OF FIRE-FIGHTING EQUIPMENT The Sumner Borough Council decided at its meeting last evening that it would adhere to its original decision to pay for fire-fighting equipment for Emergency Precautions Services work on delivery. The Mayor (Mr J. E. Tait) reported that, whereas Lyttelton had been allocated two trailer pumps, it was proposed that Sumner would share one trailer pump with New Brighton, the pump to be kept at Woolston. Cr. W. Machin said that he was authoritatively informed that there was no hose available for the council at present, and that the provision of couplings was held up pending its arrival. The council decided to make the payment of £144 2s, which was required, when the hose and. equipment were available. , If the Christchurch Fire Board objected and decided to withhold supplies, the council would request that copies of all the correspondence be supplied to Wellington. It was dec’ ’ed to publish an Emergency Precautions Services news sheet fortnightly, so that residents might be kept informed of arrangements being made in the borough. A supply of fire-fighting equipment, comprising the regulation wooden rakes, shpvels, and buckets, is to be on sale at' the Borough Councllxoffices, and the Mayor undertook to arrange for a committee to instruct residents in its use. . , . . . , He reported that the black-out trial was unsatisfactory, and a committee was set up to inform the public of the requirements of the regulations and of the penalties that would be imposed without further warning. The Mayor also reported that he had accompanied the engineer (Mr G. Harper) and an Army officer in an inspection of emergency shelters provided by the council, and the military authorities had expressed their approval. _
