SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ MATCH CANTERBURY PLAYS WELLINGTON (P.S.S.) WELLINGTON, December 16. A cricket match between teams representing Canterbury and Wellington secondary schools was begun at Wellington' College to-day. Drizzling rain handicapped bowlers at the start of play. Canterbury batted first, and Cox and Kibblewhite put on 57 for the first wicket, after which Brian and Wooley gained the upper hand bowling for Wellington. Canterbury was all out for 138. Wellington has made 56 without loss. The match will be continued to-morrow. COLLEGE MATCH ABANDONED The annual cricket match between the first elevens of Christ's College and Wanganui Collegiate School, was abandoned yesterday owing to the rain. At stumps on the first day, Wanganui Collegiate School had scored 265, and Christ’s College had lost five wickets for 158. DIFFICULTY CAUSED BY MOBILISATION Difficulties caused to cricket clubs and associations by mobilisation for military forces were mentioned in two letters before the management committee of the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association last evening. The deputy-chairman (Mr S. Cawtheray) presided. In one letter, the North Canterbury Cricket Association advised that because of mobilisation of cricketers all further cricket this season had been abandoned. The match against a suburban team in the Suburban Association shield series could not therefore be played. The second letter was from the Shirley Club, which, because of similar difficulties, was granted permission to withdraw the junior C team from the competitions. The Territorial Association of Canterbury asked whether territorials on leave could be given opportunity of taking part in games. The committee decided to send a delegate to the next meeting of the Territorial Association to discuss the question. MATCHES TO CONTINUE THROUGH HOLIDAYS Anticipating that numbers of players would be in the city in the ChristmasNew Year period if firms continued working and if leave or holiday plans had to be cancelled, the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s management committee decided last evening to rescind a previous resolution postponing competition matches on December 27 and January 3. The committee, after a full discussion, decided to postpone all competition matches on December 27 only. A representative match against Hutt Valley will be played at Hagley Park on January 2 and 3, starting at 11 a.m. The Canterbury team will be: L. Gordon (Spreydon), W. Oliver (Waltham), W. Howarth (Harewood), H. Stoddart, F. Clapshaw, D. Mitchell (Railway), J. Colombus, J. Weatherhead, R. Griffiths, N. Davidson, D. N. Stokes, captain (Beckenham), E. Beale, twelfth man (Spreydon). S. Cawtheray, F. Davison, and C. Gordon were not available. Mr H. H. Forward will be manager, and umpires for the match will be Messrs C. Cook and H. Miles.
