AIR FORCES IN MALAYA

COMPLAINTS ABOUT WEAKNESS ATTACK CAME BEFORE IT WAS EXPECTED (Received December 16, 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, December 15. Authoritative circles in London, discussing complaints about the weakness of the Air Force in Singapore and Malaya, recognise that the position is far from satisfactory. It is pointed out that the number of aeroplanes and personnel diverted to Singapore from Australia, the United States, and Britain is all that can be spared, in view of the Empire’s commitments in Britain, Libya, Syria, and Gibraltar. Japan’s attack came before it was expected, while her air strength had not been estimated. Nevertheless, experts believe that it will be possible to continue to send more aeroplanes to Malaya, particularly if America disposes of the Japanese threat to the Philippines. Meanwhile, it would seem that Australia and the Dutch East Indies must continue to be the principal sources of Malaya’s aircraft supplies.
