MILITARY CROSS FOR NORWEGIAN
♦ RESCUE OF URITISH SOLDIERS (8.0. W.) RUGBY. December 12. The Military Cross was presented at Liverpool to-day to a Norwegian quarter-master, Asbjorn Ludwigsen, who in May of last year was a secondlieutenant and liaison officer attached to the British and Norwegian forces. Ludwigsen said: "The British were evacuating from Narvik, and after the main body had crossed a swiftlyflowing river I found that a small party of Britons were cut ofT. We had Germans attacking us with tommy guns and gradually driving us to the river. The snow was melting, and we had to cross yards of fast-flpwing river. Almqst all the skiers were non-swimmers. Qne British soldier and I decided to ferry the men across. We dived in, grabbed hold pf the men, and under a hail of German fire went back and forth several times, Some of the soldiers wore killed bv the Germans and others were drowned because they tried to act across by themselves.” Ludwigsen then guided the small party 11 miles to the main British fore*.
