DWELLING DESTROYED
♦ OCCUPANTS’ NARROW ESCAPE His attention attracted by the smell of smoke, Mr E. J. Moore, of Somerset street, Sprevdon, found that the next house, in wnich Mr and Mrs C, Makepeace and their little granddaughter were sleeping, was on fire at 1.45 a.m. yesterday. Though they were sleeping soundly, he was able to rouse them before the flames reached their side of the house, and they managed to escape with a few clothes. The remainder of their belongings were destroyed and the house was gutted. After calling the Fire Brigade, Mr Moore played a garden hose on the wall of his house to prevent the fire spreading. Some of the windows were cracked and the woodwork was beginning to smoulder when the brigade arrived in time to save the house.
CHRISTCHURCH WEST HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE ♦ All the year’s activities of the Christchurch West High School, particularly those outside the class-rooms, are fully recorded in the well-printed school magazine, the “Westonian." Chief among events reviewed is the appointment of Mr C. A. Noble, M.A., B.Sc., former first assistant, as headmaster. In addition, news of the old girls’ and old boys’ associations is adequately treated. No school magazine is complete without original contributions,
which are a feature of this year’s edition of the “Westonian.”
