BOMBING OF HAWAII
SERIOUS DAMAGE TO NAVAL BASE GUAM VIRTUALLY DESTROYED (Received December 8, 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON. December 8. According to the United Press of America, Mr Roosevelt made a frank report on the Japanese bombing of Hawaii to legislative leaders. He is reported to have said .that Pearl Harbour naval base was seriously damaged. The main units of the fleet were in harbour when the Japanese attacked. He is also reported to have said that Guam was virtually destroyed. However, the full extent of the damage, especially in Hawaii, would be withheld as a military secret. The White House has received an unconfirmed report that some of the aeroplanes bore the Nazi swastika. Casualties from the raid on Oahu are thought to total about 3000, ot which 1500 are believed to have been killed. The observer at Honolulu for the National Broadcasting Company reported 350 men were killed by a direct bomb hit on the Hickman field. No details have been received of the Japanese attacks on Wake and Midway Islands. «... The Japanese radio at Taihoku, in Formosa, broadcast a report that Jap* ahese warships had surrounded Guam and that all the big buildings had beeh set on fire. ' .. . Another Japanese radio report said that Guam had been taken without resistance. Australia and Finland.—Dr. H. V.
