HAURAKI SEAT

NO LABOUR PARTY CANDIDATE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 9. The Labour Party will not contest the Hauraki electorate rendered vac* ant by the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Ji M. Allen in the Libyan campaign. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. Pi Fraser) announced to-night that both the Hauraki Labour Representation Committee and the national executive of the party had decided .that the seat would not be contested by a Labour candidate. Mr Fraser said: "In addition to the fact that any by-election contest is most objectionable at; the present moment, with the Japanese threat hanging immediately over us, and while pur Commonwealth and our ajßei, the United statei, are being attacked 90 rptfwiiy in the Pacific, the thputht 9f contesting a seat rendered vacant by the death an Opposition 9?ldier member of Parliament, .who lost his life bravely fighting for all of us on the field of battle, is simply unthinkable. Apart from the evil effect of spreading strife and discord,, when national unity is imperative as never before, which is a more than adequate reason for abstaining from the contest, I feel with the Government and the Government Party that /refraining irom an election contest Is attribute of respect to a gal*

lant soldier member of Parliament who had laid down his life for all tn# people of the constituency, ana, m deed, of the country as a whole, irrespective of political association. feel sure that this attitude accurately reflects the almost unanimous opinion of the people of New Zealand. TEMUKA seat , NOMINATION FOR NATIONAL PARTY CANDIDATE Mr J. Acland, manager of the Moi#?!Peel Station, Peel Forest, has agree? to allow his name to go forward m w ( ballot to select a National Party caa«date for the Temuka seat. '" I
