GAMING ACT

ALLEGED RECEIVING OF WHIPPET RACE BETS CASE AGAINST FIVE MEN ADJOURNED TO TO-DAY A case against five men charged under the Gaming Act with receiving bets on whippet racing at Christchurch on November 1 was adjourned until today (Tuesday) by Mr H. A. Young, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Raymond Oldridge was charged that, being a person having the care of premises (at Portman street) open, kept, or used for betting, he received money as deposits on bets. The same charge was brought against William Linton. Robert Alexander Don was similarly charged, the premises named in this charge being Bower Park. Charles Edwin Maddams and Gordon Brodie Arps were also charged in respect of Bower Park, the charges describing them as persons “assisting in the conduct of the premises." Oldridge and Linton were represented by Mr J. T. Watts, and Don, Maddams, and Arps by Mr F. D. Sargent.
