MENINGITIS IN CANTERBURY
THREE CASES IN LAST WEEK MEDICAL OFFICER’S COMMENT Three cases of cerebro-spinal meningitis were included in the list of notifiable diseases received by the Health Department office in Christchurch for the week ended yesterday. One of the cases should have been included in the figures for last week, having occurred in the South Canterbury area. The other two were notified within the last few days—one from the Ellesmere district and the other from an area adjacent to the city. “No special significance can be attached to these three cases, coming as they do at scattered intervals.” said the Medical Officer of Health (Dr. T. Fletcher Telford), when, commenting on the notifications yesterday. There were 24 cases of notifiable disease reported to the department from the Canterbury area for the week ended yesterday. They were as follow: —Scarlet fever three, tuberculosis 11. diphtheria one, erysipelas three, cere-bro-spinal meningitis three, ophthalmia neonatorum one, hydatids two. There were three deaths in the Canterbury area, all from tuberculosis. From the West Coast one case of tuberculosis was notified. There were no deaths from the West Coast.
