DAMAGE FROM SEA AT REDCLIFFS
RESIDENTS TO CONSTRUCT OWN WALLS When it was reported that residents ‘of Redcliffs considered the Government’s scheme for protection from sea damage too costly, the Sumner Borough Council last evening decided to take steps to obtain money to lend to ratepayers to undertake their own work. It was reported that ratepayers had carried a motion that the residents individually construct their own walls and that the council endeavour to obtain authority to give financial assistance to residents who might require it. The residents had accepted the effer of the council to supply rubble at 10s a yard for this work. With a view to establishing a department for the sale of gas appliances, a committee consisting of Crs. E. T. Chitty (Deputy-Mayor). F. W. J. Murdoch, and W. Machin, and the engineer (Mr A. A. Cheshire), was set up. Cr. Murdoch said that he was particularly anxious to make the equipment available on hire purchase to tenants if it was possible to do so. The Mayor; The council is to be congratulated in having got the proceedings to this stage so quickly, It is desirable to proceed with them as soon as possible, more particularly because of the acute shortage of electrical equipment. The electrical engineer (Mr Cheshire) reported that a record of 426,000 gallons of water had been, pumped in one day. The council decided again to restrict the hours of watering at private gardens to between 6 and 8 o’clock, morning and evening.
