Their Excellencies Sir Cyril and Lady Newall will be the guests of the Christchurch Golf Club at tea at the clubhouse at Shirley on Saturday afternoon. Mrs Biddlecombe (Toorak, Melbourne) is visiting her daughter, Mrs E. H. Garrick, Fendalton. Mrs W. J. Bevis (The Manse, Kaikoura) left yesterday for Dunedin, and will later visit Central Otago. Miss Moira Gibson, who has been the guest of Misses E. and M. Wareham, “Wheatlands,” Kaikoura, has returned to Christchurch. Mrs L. K. Sterritt has completed her 60 hours’ V.A.D. training at the Kaikoura Hospital. Mrs T. Reid, who has been staying with Misses C. and M. Kerr, Mount Fyffe road, Kaikoura, has returned to Christchurch. Mrs Allan Johnston (Dunedin), who has been visiting Christchurch, returned to Dunedin during the weekend. She was a guest at Warner’s Hotel. News has been received that Sister Shona Dunlop McCormick, N.Z.A.N.S., formerly of Southbridge, has returned to duty at No. 3 General Base Hospital, Egypt, after an extensive tour of Egypt and Palestine. Mrs P. Barnett (Nelson), who has been the guest of her mother, Mrs M. Baxter, St. Albans, returned home on Saturday. Miss M. Mcllroy (Chester street) is the guest of Mrs P. Barnett, Nelson. Mrs Dawson and Mrs Schnelle judged the home produce at the Courtenay Show on Saturday. There was a good attendance of members at a recent meeting of the Cercle Francais held at the Empire Club rooms. Dr. C. Malthus presided. The programme, which was arranged by the hostesses, Misses Valerie Barrel!, Lucie Brown, Patricia Hulston, and Beth Wilson (Lyttelton) included French games and French competitions. Mesdames H. Honore, V. E. Degraeve, and E. W. Lewington tied for first place in the competition. Violin and piano duets were played by Misses Lucie and Nancy Brown. Mrs Guy Pascoe and Miss Edith Tod were hostesses at a bridge and mahjongs party held at Hay’s lounge last night, and arranged by members of the Toe H League of Women Helpers m aid of staff funds. Some 50 members and friends, sent in donations. Prize-winners were as follows:—Miss M. Beadel (contract). Miss E. Bull (auction), Mrs R. W. Morrow (hidden number), Mrs Drummond (mahjongg). Mrs Lawrence Wilson presided over a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch Central Townswomen’s Guild. Mrs R. J. McLaren, president of the Canterbury Women’s Club, arranged a programme entitled “March of Life.” This included a play reading by Mrs McLaren and Miss Grant, songs by Misses Eileen Lawry and Yvonne Watson, and a talk by Mrs H. C. Hewland, “The Music of Marches,” with appropriate pianoforte items by Mrs D. F. Dennehy. Mrs W. Hutchins was accompanist for the songs. The death has occurred of Mrs H. P. Monkhouse, senior mistress at the Wanganui Technical College. Mrs Monkhouse had been a secondary school teacher in Wanganui for four years, and before that was a teacher at a number of North Island schools and in Wales. Her husband, Mr W. Monkhouse, is a teacher at the New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill. The lady editor of “The Press” gratefully acknowledges receipt of a donation of 10s and a scarf for men on minesweepefs in New Zealand waters from an anonymous friend, and a balaclava for a man on an English minesweeper from H.M.G.
