VICEREGAL CHRISTCHURCH, November 24, 1941. This morning her Excellency Lady Newall, attended by Captain C. J, Holland-Martin, visited the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force at Wlgram. The Right Honourable A. Duff Cooper, M.P., ’ and Lady Diana Duff Cooper have left “Daresbury." The Chief Justice, the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers, will preside at sittings of the Supreme Court in Dunedin this Week. Count Wodzicki, Consul-General for Poland in New Zealand, who is visiting Dunedin, will return to Wellington to-day. For the eleventh successive year, Mr R. H. Nimmo has been re-elected president of the Wellington Young Men’s Christian Association. Sumner By-election Because of the death of Cr. E. A. M. Roberts, the Sumner Borough Council has made arrangements for a by-election on December 17, the roll closing on December 3 and nominations on December 5. The Mayor (Mr J. E. Tait) paid a tribute to the work done by Cr. Roberts, and the council passed a motion of sympathy with the relatives. Buller Gorge Railway Arrangements have been completed for the ceremony next Tuesday of driving the last spike in the Buller Gorge railway, completing the connexion between Westport and Reefton. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) and the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) will arrive by aeroplane for the function in the morning, leaving in the afternoon. The Hon. P. C. Webb and the Hon. R. Semple will arrive fearlier and give addresses on Monday evening. Smoking Room for Nurses After hearing a report of a special committee on the question of providing a smoking room for nurses at the Wanganui Hospital, the Wanganui Hospital Board agreed to the committee’? suggestion that one of the sittingrooms in the old nurses’ home should be made available for the purpose. Raffles for Patriotic Funds Raffles of which only a part of the proceeds are intended to be devoted to patriotic purposes are to be the subject of investigation by the New Plymouth Borough and Taranaki County Patriotic Committee. The matter was introduced by Mr F. L. Frost, M.P., at a meeting of the general -committee when .he sought information of a raffle promoted on the basis of 50 per cent, to the promoters and 50 per cent, to the patriotic purposes.
