MENTAL WELFARE SOCIETY
Sir,—l did not intend the correspondence on the above society te~.be a battle of words between Mr Ridder and myself, but wrote hoping to be informed what had been, or is being, accomplished by it, during its 18 months' work, in the interests of the mental patients. Not having achieved that desire, I can only conclude, as I mentioned in my first letter, that it has, like many another, sunk into oblivion. The reason which prevents me from ! disclosing my identity prevents me : also from taking advantage of Mr Ridder's offer to correspond with him , at present, much as I would like to. 1 He may hear later of me, and will find I am "not impossible to work with." If he wants something to do, 1 let him organise a Dominion-wide petition to have a Royal Commission set up to investigate the mental hospital system of New Zealand. Also, if he is not a member of the society let him organise a visitors' association, • of those who see the institutions from a> the inside, and do not, like members, have to depend on reportyTTW Thus a beginning will be made to the advantage of the common caused Yours, etc., FIRST THINGS FIRST. [This correspondence is now closed.— , Ed., "The Press."]
