MAIN TRUNK LINE FLOODED
SHORT SECTION CARRIED AWAY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. It was raining heavily round Shannon and Levin on Thursday, and with the ground already heavily soaked, flood waters on Friday night collected faster than drainage could carry them away and flooded the railway line, which is low-lying. About half a mile on the Palmerston side of Shannon is a section of line carried on a low trestle bridge. It showed signs of weakening early on Saturday morning. Trains passed over it slowly, but at 8 o’clock, the concrete supports were undermined and a complete break of more than a chain in length occurred. The Limited express from Auckland, then already late, was stopped at the washout, and passengers were transferred from Makerua to_ Shannon, where a relief train received them. Similar arrangements were made for all passenger traffic. Important trains continued to use this route, but the train from Napier was diverted to the Wairarapa line. Main highway traffic could get through. By this morning the line had been reopened. Traffic to-day was normal, except for a speed restriction over the place where the line had been repaired.
