VICEREGAL CHRISTCHURCH, November 22, 1941, This afternoon her Excellency Lady Newall inspected the Nursing Divisions of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. The Rt. Hon. A. Duff Cooper, M.P., and Lady Diana Duff Cooper, have arrived at "Daresbury.” November 23, 1941. This morning their Excellencies the Gover-nor-General and Lady Newall attended divine service in the Chapel of Christ’s College. Subsequently his Excellency gave an address to the boys of the college. The Chief Justice (the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers) travelled from the north by the steamer express on Saturday morning. Archbishop West-Watson, Primate of New Zealand, returned to Christchurch from Wellington by the steamer express on Saturday morning. Major P. R. Woodhouse has been transferred from the Reserve of Officers to be Major, New Zealand Medical Corps, and has been posted to the Southern Military District. During the week-end, Mr A. R. Smith, formerly postmaster at St. Albans, started his new duties as supervisor of the postal branch at the Chief Post Office, Invercargill. He is replacing Mr J. O’Brien, Who was recently promoted to the position of senior supervisor of the postal branch at Invercargill. Lieutenant H. A. Sutcliffe, Section Commander, No. 25 Company, Christchurch, Home Guard Lines of Communication, has resigned his commission. Sergeant H. Hogg, who has been attached to the Dunedin Central Police Station for some years, has received notice of his transfer to Invercargill. Sergeant Hogg is a former South Canterbury representative Rugby player ; and while in Dunedin has taken a very keen interest in the activities of the Police Rugby team. He is president of the Dunedin Police Social Club and chairman of the Dunedin branch of the Police Association. Mr J. E. McG. Byrne has been appointed lieutenant (temporary), as Christchurch inspector, empty components (grenades, etc.), Army Inspection Department. Dr. C. D. Halstead, son of Mr R. D. Halstead, Dunedin, has passed his final examination at the London University for a fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. Dr. Halstead took his degree at the University of Otago five years ago, and in the last three years has been attached to the medical services in various parts of England. The appointment of Mr Norman Seager Batchelor as second-lieutenant (temporary) and his posting to the 3rd Provost Company, Corps of New Zealand Military Police, are announced in the Gazette. Lieutenant-Colonel D. Barnes, Group Director of the Home Guard in Group 10A, Timaru, has resigned his commission on appointment to a commission in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He is succeeded by Lieutenant-Colonel G. Mathias, M.C. Lieutenant (temporary) R. C. Neville, section commander, No. 23 Company, Christchui’ch, Home Guard Lines of Communication, has been appointed second in command of the company, and has been granted the temporary rank of captain.
