SANDERS CUP
FIRST TRIAL WON BY NEW BOAT Victory, built recently by* Mr Fred. Dobby, won the first trial race held at Lyttelton on Saturday to select a boat and crew to represent Canterbury in the Sanders Cup contest, to be held at Lyttelton early in January. Victory was sailed by George Brasell, who has won the cup for this province on several occasions. Huia, now of Akaroa, was well handled by W. Pool, and finished a good second. Light weather crews were carried, the boats and crews being—Arikl (W. Tissiman. Albert Sinclair, R. Kingston); Victory (G. Brasell, R. Crocker, R. Prlddy); Huia (W. Pool, J. Prendergast, L. Langrope); Teao (F. Dobby, jun., G. Gillies, N. Seymour). A windward and leeward course was chosen for the race, which was started at 2.45 p.m. Huia secured the weather position in crossing the line, with Arikl, Victory, and Teao in that order. Off Officers’ Point, Huia still held the advantage, with Arlki and Victory making board for board together. Victory then broke away and soon held the weather position. Ariki weathered Huia, but before rounding the mark, Huia had regained second place. The three turned the mark within five seconds. Teao being some distance away. On the run, Victory put more water between her and Huia, leading by 67 seconds off Diamond Harbour. The pile was rounded the first time as follows:—Victory, 3.18,2 p.m.; Ariki, 3.19.20; Huia, 3.19.33, Teao, 3.19.40. Positions were unchanged in the second round, until Huia moved up alongside Ariki, when running opposite the pier. The times at the pile the second time were:—Victory, 4.5.5 p.m.; Hula, 4.6.29; Ariki, 4.6.30; Teao, 4.9.0. Pool and Tissiman had a great contest for second place on the final beat for the Sticking Point buoy, the Akaroa skipper finally getting the best of it and rounding well ahead of Ariki. Brasell had an easy task in keeping Victory in the lead, and the finish was as follows: p.m. Victory .. 5.3.48 1 Huia .. ~ 5.7.16 2 Ariki .. .. 5.8.18 3 Teao .. .. The contest, is decided on the points system and points allotted for the first race were:—Victory 15, Huia 7, Ariki 3, Teao 1. The second race will be held on Saturday.
