TURF GOSSIP
To Correspondents Curious and A. E. J.—Burra Sahib was scratched for the Stewards’ Handicap at 12.2 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, the day of the race. Reduced Team C. Emerson expects to go south for the holiday racing with Don’t Forget and Benevolent, the intention being to attend the Dunedin, Waikouaiti, and Oamaru meetings. The two-year-old, Foxhaxen, may accompany th' ’ on the trip. These are the only horses he has in work at present. Blue Bouquet has been turned oiit. Arabian Night is also spelling, but he will resume training after the holidays, to be prepared for the autumn, when he may show form in distance races. As Required has left the stable and is now being trained by R. Register. Useful Team H. and A. Cutts will probably do their holiday racing in the North Island, the present intention being to patronise the Manawatu and Wairarapa meetings. The team may be made up of Wild Talk, Wild Fox, Court Dress, and a two-year-old. A Smart Pair A. McAulay is keeping Stabilise and Sir Gundi in useful work. They may go north in the holidays, starting off with Manawatu, with Marton or Wairarapa to follow. Easy Programme The two-year-old filly Grilse, has not been severely taxed since she won the Welcome Stakes. She will not be required to do' much racing this season, but it is hoped to have her at Trentham in January for her next outing. A Novice Anchorage has been put into work by H. and A. Cutts, who will get him ready for autumn racing. He is a wellgrown three-year-old, a brother to Good Passage, by Winning Hit—Fast Passage. Good Prospect A; S. Ellis has Rawhamai in work and as he was hacked for some weeks before he returned to Riccarton, he should be fairly forward by Christmas. He should win good races in the autumn. A Newcomer The latest addition to the team of A. S. Ellis, is a four-year-old chestnut mare by Myosotis—Mistress Quickly, by Solferino—Dame Straitlace. She has just been broken in and she is gradually settling down to the new conditions on the racecourse. The mare will be raced by Mr D. O. Rutherford. Fresh Horses Spanish Lad, Boaform, and Music Hall are among the horses engaged, at Invercargill tolday who have not yet raced this season. Ellerslie Attraction Kindergarten has engagements in some of the chief events at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting, including the two weight-for-age races, the King’s Plate, one mile, and the Clifford Plate, one mile and a quarter. Provided he survives a preparation, he will be a big attraction at the meeting. According to reports there has been no further development of the leg trouble that jeopardised his spring prospects in Australia, but some experts declare that the weakness will reassert itself when the strain is applied. Auckland Cup As a rule’ Riccarton form is the basis of the handicapper’s adjustments for the Auckland Cup, but this year there; will be a restriction, due to the fact that Happy Ending, the winner of the New Zealand Cup, is not engaged,; while another absentee is his stablemate, Gladynev, runner-up in the New Zealand Cup, and winner of the Metropolitan Handicap. Rider In Form . , L. H. Clifford,’light-weight jockey, did not take long to get into his stride when he returned to the Dominion after an absence of two years, spent mostly in South Africa. He resumed race riding at Levin on Thursday and piloted two winners. Back in Old Stable . The three-year-old Foreign Com, who was trained by W. J. Bromley at Trentham when he won the Wanganui Guineas, has been handed back to P. Burgess to prepare for his autumn engagements. The Lackham gelding did badly during the Wellington spring meeting, and he is not likely to run again for a few months. Burgess trained him when he won the Wellesley Stakes last season. Battledress The Posterity gelding Battledress, winner of the New Zealand Derby, had a few days’ rest after he returned to his home at Hawera, but he has resumed light exercise. His next mission will be a trip to Auckland, where his engagements include the Great Northern Derby, but it is probable he will have a race on the first day of the meeting. Another rider will have to be secured for the Great Northern Derby, as A. E. Ellis has been retained for Regal Fox. The policy of the Auckland Racing Club in taking nominations in October for many of the chief events at the summer meeting has again been shown up by Battledress. At that early stage his merit does not seem to have been recognised, as he was not nominated for the King s Plate or the Clifford Plate. Owners Return Three New Zealand sportsmen came back from Australia a few days ago. They were Mr R. Stewart, owner of Beau Vite, Mr G. J. Barton, part-owner of All Veil, winner of the Newmarket Handicap, and Mr V. P. . Bernard, owner of Omapo, a Dommxon-brcd galloper who has raced with success in Australia. Mr Stewart said that Beau Vite was spelling' at Bacchus Marsh and would remain there until it was time for him to go into serious work for autumn racing. Beau Vite will therefore not be here for the Auckland Cup and weight-for-age races at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting. Lost ffo Friends An Auckland correspondent says that Lou Rosa lost no friends in his defeat in the Waikato Cup on Saturday. He drew the extreme outside of a big field, and had to be hard ridden to secure a position leaving the straight. From that point he was forced to race on the outside of two and sometimes
