— ♦ — FRIDAY (Before Mr A. A. McLachlanj S.M.) GAOL FOR ASSAULT Frederick Charles* Greenhalgh, a labourer, aged 23, appeared for sentence on charges of assaulting Gordon Kay on September 10, and assaulting Percy Thomas Kiddy on January 1. On the first charge he was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour, and on the second he was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, the sentences to be cumulative. FAILURE TO REPORT ‘ Henry Davis Steffens, of no fixed abode, aged 37, was charged that being a person called up for military service he committed a breach of the National Service Regulations by not reporting at King Edward Barracks op July 9. Sub-Inspector E. T. C. Turner said Steffens had been called up in the third overseas ballot on December 4, 1940, but had changed his address several times since. For 11 months he had evaded service. He was arrested on Thursday at Rangiora. Steffens was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. REMANDED Reginald Mori, aged 28, was charged with stealing a woman's bicycle valued at £5, the property of Margaret Mortimer. He was remanded to November 28 to enable the police to make further inquries. Sub-Inspector Turner said that the accused had been previously convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within 12 months, for stealing a bicycle. TRAFFIC OFFENCES The following. offenders against the traffic regulations were fined as follows, costs being additional in each case:—Careless driving; Wilfred Henry B-rtks, £2; Robert Alexander Galletly, 20s; Patrick Hornby, 20s; David Daniel Lloyd, 10s; Harry Andrew Newman. ss; Keith Sheirlaw, 10s. No driver's licence: Douglas Arthur Cross, 20s (no warrant of fitness, 10s); Henry Maurice Reid, 10s (no warrant of fitness, 10s). No warrant of fitness: William Cecil Raymond Greer, 20s; Failing to give way: Leslie George Macbeth. 20s; James Fenwick Martin, £2; Herbert Arthur Peters, 20s; Charles Alexander Woods, 20s. CIVIL COURT (Before Mr H. A. Young, S M.) APPRENTICESHIP BREACH The District Registrar of Apprentices claimed a £5 penalty from Maurice Thomas, of Methven, alleging a breach of the Apprenticeship Act, in that Thomas absented himself from the service of his employer, Ronald Leslie
Sparrow, a joinery manufacturer, Christchur. hj. from August 28 to October 2, 1941,. without just cause. , Mr S. E. McGregor, for the Registrar, said that Thomas’s explanation was that since entering into the apprenticeship contract, he had married, and could not keep a wife and child on his wages, which were £2 8s 9d after deduction of tax. His wages in his new position were £4 6s. A penalty of £3 was awarded against the defendant. The Magistrate said that he would be liable to a further penalty if he did not return to his employer. Estuary Road.—The South Brighton Progress League has decided to ask the City Council to tar-seal the whole of Estuary road and have a fire sump installed at Halsey street.
