LAWN TENNIS

COMPETITIONS BEGIN

PLAY IN SOUTHERLY GALE

The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s first grade mixed competition opened on the grass courts at Wilding Park on Saturday in most unfavourable conditions. There was a strong and cold southerly wind and occasional flurries of rain prevented the courts drying thoroughly after the overnight rain. Nevertheless the teams showed keenness and some excellent games resulted. Nearly all were closely contested and that between North Linwood and Sumner was decided on games, sets being even. Most of the teams are of a fairly even standard, the women's section being slightly stronger than last year and compensating tor the loss of many of the men. ELMWOOD A v. REDCLIFFS Men’s Singles.—B. SCHOOLS’ COMPETITIONS POSTPONED The first round of the boys’ section of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's inter-primary schools’ competition was postponed for the second time on Saturday. The competition was to have begun two weeks ago, but the weather was unfavourable. The following week a start was made with the girls’ sections, although rain threatened early in the morning. The second postponement on Saturday was a disappointment to the youngsters, who have shown much enthusiasm in the new competition. Large entries have been received, for both the boys’ and girls’ sections.
