ELLESMERE HOME GUARD

A good muster of men'from all.,the Home Guard units in the Ellesmere County took part in the, first tactical exercise held in the district. The scheme of operations was that an enemy force had landed on the NinetyMile beach and had seized the Eakaia and Selwyn bridges. The Army was supposed to be engaged in beating off an attempt to land on the beach north of .Christchurchv and the Home Guard had been assigned the task of clearing the main road of the enemy.

The Ellesmere units were allotted the work , of capturing .the'Selwyn; bridge. The, holders were represented: by the Bunsandel ’ unit, under Mr C.M. Sheat,.and, the attacking party consisted of; the. remaining units under; the commandof Mr :; H. D. Jones; of Leeston, After the “battle” the men assembled for a brief religious service conducted by the Rev. L. G. B. Whitehead, after which Lieutenant-Colonel: Murchison, who was accompanied by ! the. sub-area.; commander,. Mr: W, S.. McLaughlin, gave a short talk on the day’s work.
