Centre is* shortly being held in Cairo to review the progress made since it was established some months ago under the direction of the Ministry of War Transport. The centre’s task is to lopk aftef, the civil needs of the many- territories which find themselves cut off flbm many of their normal sources ofsflp* ply. The centre serves an area ; of 2,500,000 square miles with a population of 50,000,000, comprising Egypt, Turkey; Palestine, Transjordan, Sudan, Syria, Malta, Cyprus, Aden; British Somaliland, Ethiopia, and eriemy territories in Africa occupied f by British forces. ■
Before the war a large part of the supplies of these territories came across or through the Mediterranean by routes now closed. New sources have had to be found and new methods of purchase arranged. To rely on the traditional commercial methods would have been disastrous. *
